13.05.1990. Dinamo vs C. zvezda

Dinamo Zagreb vs Crvena zvezda.
Before the match, Crvena zvezda ultras, Delije, were rampant, tearing the seats, throwing them into other sections of the stadium, which were occupied by regular people, smaller groups who came to watch, not to fight, and burning Croatian flags. Bad Blue Boys were incensed and since the police wasn't going to intervene, they stormed the pitch and charged in their hundreds towards the Delije-held stand. Now when the riot police did intervene the 'Battle of Zagreb' have already began, with dozens of injured on both sides. For many BBB that was the beginning of a war.

Dinamo's greatest day
By Elvir Islamovic uefa.com

Croatia's most successful club, NK Dinamo Zagreb's finest hour came in the 1966/67 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup when they won what remains their country's only European trophy. A talented generation of players that included striker Slaven Zambata and goalkeeper Zlatko Škoric lifted the forerunner of the UEFA Cup.

Friendly success
The signs of success were there in pre-season friendly victories against a strong AC Milan side and Celtic FC – who would become European champions later that season. Nevertheless, what followed surprised even the Dinamo players. "No one, not even us, expected such a brilliant season," said Zambata. "There was a big difference between us and the rich clubs from the west. We played against teams where one player cost more than our entire squad."

Coin toss
Despite the final glorious outcome, Dinamo's European campaign almost ended at the first hurdle. Following a 2-2 aggregate draw with Czech side 1. FC Brno, Dinamo needed the lottery of a coin toss to progress to the second round. Then, against Dunfermline Athletic FC, Branko Zebec's men were required to turn around a two-goal deficit. With the Scottish team leading 4-2 from the first leg, Dinamo went through on away goals thanks to a 2-0 victory in Zagreb.

Italians beaten
Next, Dinamo edged out Romanian outfit FC Arges-Dacia Pitesti 1-0 on aggregate to earn a quarter-final against Italian giants Juventus FC. Here an impressive 2-2 draw in Turin prefaced one of the greatest nights in Dinamo's history: goals from Marijan Novak, Zlatko Mesic and Rudolf Belin securing a 3-0 success in Zagreb.

Heavy defeat
However, it seemed that victory would be in vain when Germany's Eintracht Frankfurt scored twice in the opening two minutes of the semi-final first leg to set up a 3-0 home win. Once more, though, Dinamo rose to the challenge in front of their passionate supporters.

Spectacular turnaround
Zambata and Novak struck early goals to give Dinamo hope, but it was not until the 93rd minute of play that Josip Gucmirtl scored again to force extra time. Eight minutes from the end of this additional period, Stjepan Lamza was brought down inside the penalty area and Zambata's spot-kick sent Dinamo through to the final as 4-3 aggregate victors.

Inspiring result
'Those goals against Eintracht weren't my favourites that season,' Zambata said.

'I always said that my favourite goal was my next one. Having said that, after we had won 4-0 I was convinced we would take the trophy.'

Against the odds
Dinamo's story-book comeback visibly lifted the team, who went on to defy the odds one more time with an unexpected victory against English side Leeds United AFC. Yet again their imperious home form was the foundation for success. In Zagreb, 19-year-old Marijan Cercek gave Dinamo a 39th-minute lead, which Krasnodar Rora doubled on the hour. The 2-0 cushion proved sufficient in the return leg at Elland Road, as stout Dinamo defending earned a goalless draw and the trophy.

Flying high
'We had lost to Valencia [CF] in the final of the same competition four years earlier, but here we managed to take the final step,' said Zambata.
'We were flying in the final in Zagreb, we were so euphoric. Leeds were a great team but we won.'
